as outdoor recreation increases in popularity, search and rescue missions are becoming a daily occurrence.
Though this is largely the result of sheer volume, there are lots of steps you can take to help ensure you don’t become tomorrow’s headline, from learning how to read a map and use a compass to carrying an emergency beacon for hiking.

Registration renewal should take place every two years at a minimum. The more detail you provide and the more frequently you update your registration, you are giving the people coming to rescue you all the information they need to expedite your own rescue. Personal locator beacons (plbs) like the ocean signal rescueme plb1 or our former pick, the now-discontinued acr resqlink+ have one function: to send a distress signal. These small, lightweight, inexpensive, and nearly indestructible units offer no texting or two-way communication; they won’t function as a gps, won’t track you with waypoints, give you a weather report, or link to social media. As far as keeping the people back home informed of your whereabouts and state of health, using a plb is a “no news is good news” thing. All the satellite messengers we considered come with a monthly subscription cost.

Other beacons [ edit ]
The resqlink view is the latest in acr's multi-decade evolution. Our lead test editor used one of the original acr beacons in the early 2000s. Fifteen years ago, a device performing this function (in an even more rudimentary fashion) was four times the size of the view. In this historical perspective, the acr is tiny and light. However, as compared to the other options available nowadays, the acr is twice the size and about 140% of the weight. In many contexts, this is not a big deal. However, for ultralight backpacking and trail running, the weight and bulk will be noticeable.
